Interview with DJ BoBo
        24.02.2006, Hallenstadion, Zurich

We met DJ BoBo the day before his last concert in Hallenstadion 25.02.2006. During his soundcheck we asked him some questions

DJ BoBo, now you are doing the sound check for your concert in Zurich in Hallenstadion for tomorrow. What about the Olympiad in Turin? Do you follow the news?
Oh, yeah. I always watch the news of the Olympiad on SF of Swiss Television. So, Im in course of all events.

How long is your rehearsal?
Today we have just started. Yesterday we had the TV show with Sandra. She stayed with us not so long. But tomorrow Sandra will come to the Hallenstasion and after that well perform together on different TV shows.

DJ BoBos music from its beginning in 1992 till today came the way from the classical eurodance to dancepop. Were you supposed in your first years of success that eurodance in a few years wont be actual anymore?
Eurodance was the wave, which washes everything on its way. But it ended. Somehow we were different from other projects. Other eurodance groups disappeared, we stayed. It was clear changes are necessary. 5 years ago "eurodance" was rude word. Five years after everybody will say its cool again. Kai Bocking, the moderator of 80s musical show "Formula 1" once told me in the 90s he couldnt declare he was the moderator of the "Formula 1". And now everybody likes it again. It was hard time. We have to follow it and as a result I started making "europop". If I still did that thing which I did in 1992, today, I guess I wouldnt be here anymore.

Recently DRS3 channel has been looking for the number 1 eurodance hit in Switzerland. "Somebody Dance With Me" was the second after Haddaways "What Is Love". Are you disappointed?
I have heard nothing about it

But anyway you gave the interview about it, because they told the history of this song from your point of view
No, it must be some old interview. Recently I havent given any interviews about "Somebody Dance With Me" to this channel.

The scene of your actual "Pirates Of Dance Tour" 2005/2006 for the first time looks like a bridge to the public. What did you feel when this idea lied down on your table?
Its a big pleasure for us to be as close to public as possible. For the technicians its much more harder, because they have to settle the sound around. Perhaps they would work better if the scene was usual. But Id like to use only scene form which are possible technically. Of course, it wouldnt be bad if I tried some other scene forms, but they not always have such a view which is needed.

On the 1st of August there will be an open-air concert in Engleberg. How did the idea come?
During 8-9 years I dreamt to make a special event on the 1st of August, because I understand that Swiss national holiday is usually not accompanied with music. In 2006 we dont have any tours, so the idea came itself. This year is the best for that. Engleberg is a special place where we are supported whatever we do. But in the beginning we wanted to organize the concert in Bern, but we would run out of money if entranced were free of charge No, at this day in Engleberg well build a special scene and do our best for this occasion.

So if we talk about open-air concert: maybe you will perform on another open-air?
I dont know exactly, because there is nothing settled. We will perform in several places, but I dont know where exactly.

With "Chihuahua" you attacked almost all world charts as well as in "new" countries for you. For example France. At the end of March youll give to concerts in Paris Disneyland. Is it something like a start position for the second try to conquer France?
No, the deal is only in Disneyland which is all of sudden in France. All marketing actions are on German organizators. The concerts will be available only for German and Swiss. I know that the tickets are not possible to buy in France. France is very special musical market and its very hard to sell there my music. "Chihuahua" was just out of rule, summer hit like all hits from Las Ketchup for example. You cant forbid it to become a hit as well as you cant do anything for your successful career there after it. Its a phenomenon when the song becomes a world hit and nothing else can reach its success.

Beginning from your "Visions Tour" 2003 your music sounds "alive". Before you always used CDs. How did you do such a step?
It came with my development. I always wanted to do something new, something which will give me much more musical possibilities.

You play in Marco Rimas movie "Handyman" as a candidate for the show taking a part in casting. How did you come to it?
I and Marco Rima are friends and we always help each other. He asked me to join and I agreed immediately. I played my role in the movie with a big pleasure. When I can laugh at myself it brings me so much joy.

This time the third level of "Germany Seeks Superstar" program takes place in Germany. What is your attitude to such programs?
I find it a good way to talk, where you can laugh and give a hand to each other. Its jolly. But you cant give more value for such programs because they dont create anything lasting. Of course, there can be one or two persons who manage to go through. And its perfect. For example Kelly Clarkson. But shes not known much in Europe. For us its just an American music. As soon as everybody finds out about it, its much harder for an artist to go through here. I think such programs are just pure TV-talk like every second TV-program. I also believe there will be next season in Switzerland. If this German casting show has such a success, on Swiss Television must be the same situation. It will be good when the next season comes.

In the middle of March 2006 your new CD "Greatest Hits" will be released. It will contain 17 youre the most successful and known songs as well as 3 new tracks. Did you have any problem choosing among 26 tracks?
Yes, it was quite hard for us. We absolutely didnt do this aim easier. We had different proposes: charts positions, radio air-plays. But the song not always becomes famous when enters the charts. The majority of songs are promoted by radio. Happens that those songs which were on the highest positions before, nowadays arent famous at all because they are not played by radio. We combined chart positions and the voting on our site. But we cant accept seriously such voting, because its not presentable and we have to be more careful with it. You can accept it just to be in course but not for anything else. We thought about making double CD. So we would have an opportunity to record all 26 video clips and "Secrets Of Love" song with Sandra on one DVD. Now we have one audio CD with 17 hits and 3 new songs and also CD/DVD with 20 songs and 27 video clips with karaoke function.

After "What A Feeling" with Irene Cara in 2001, now in 2006 you recorded a song named "Secrets Of Love" in a duet with successful artist of the 80s Sandra. How did you come to cooperation?
We got acquainted on World Music Awards in 2001. Shes wonderful woman. After the birth of her twins 11 years ago the family was main for her. Now her boys got older and she wants to come back to music. I asked her if she wants to record a new song with me. It was not so easy for her to decide. He has never worked with someone in duet and with other producer. Its so flattering that Michael Cretu confided Sandra to me.

In September 1985 Sandra for the first time entered Swiss Charts with the song "(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena". What did you think about this song being a DJ in youth club "Tuchlaube"?
I fell in love with this song. But the song is a half of the deal. When I saw its performer photos I was very impressed by her. Firstly I saw this song on Italian import CD and so I thought perhaps Sandra was Italian. I had the same situation. Everybody thought I was black rapper until they saw my photos. In 1987 Sandra came to Wohlen to "Don Paco" discotheque where I worked as a DJ. It was a big event to say hello to such a famous star on our discotheque.

The members of our site hitparade.ch can vote for every song and album of an artist. Which do you think of your song they vote for?
I believe people principally vote for old songs. Perhaps its "Everybody", "Let The Dream Come True", "Shadows of The Night" "Freedom" is cult song. I have to admit the older song the more popular it is.

Do you as musician pay attention on such answers?
No, its quite dangerous. Such person like me is extremely polar. There is just black or white, good or bad for me. The objective point of view is not correct for this situation. You cant accept such things seriously otherwise you wont be able to avoid the crisis. Its necessary to go your own way, to do it step by step and as good as possible. Public persons can suddenly reach wide cult status. Nena is a good example for it. She came into show business with New German Wave and stayed there during many years. Suddenly she became a cult person. Everybody said: "Nena is super". But these people didnt declare it several years ago In this situation you can just watch and to stay objective for yourself. Of course you can take into the attention radio redactors opinion, but theres no need to accept them seriously. At least you make music for yourself and for your fans.

We have a tradition to present people who we interview top 10 Swiss Singlecharts. Can you comment it?
10. Mary J Blige - Be Without You
9. Simple Plan - Untitled (How Could This Happen To Me?)
8. Pinocchio - Klick Klack
7. Madonna - Hung Up
6. Chris Brown feat. Juelz Santana - Run It!
5. Mattafix - Big City Life
4. US5 - Come Back To Me Baby
3. Ch!pz - 1001 Arabian Nights
2. Bob Sinclair pres. Goleo VI feat. Gary "Nesta" Pine - Love Generation
1. Eros Ramazzotti & Anastacia - I Belong To You (Il ritmo della passione)
I know that soon new Madonnas single "Sorry" will take 1st position! (seeks himself in the list) Oh, Eros Ramazzotti impresses me much because he enters single charts not so often.

But Eros and Anastasia performed on "Wetten Dass?"
Yes, but performing on "Wetten Dass?" not always means something. For example Sugarbabes also took part there but there was nothing to happen. But its logical they performed their old song "Push the Button" Its a very good chart: Ch!pz is europop for little children, Mattafix is for older ones, Chris Brown is for little children too. Madonna is for adults, Eros Ramazzotti & Anastacia are for adults too. Thats why their first position impresses me. I dont know Bob Sinclair much despite he records his songs on the same recording company in Germany as me. Mary J Blige is quite adult music as well. Pinocchio is for children too but I dont know exactly
Im satisfied with charts. They are reflection of the musically active society. Radio stations dont reflect this so clearly because they play a little part of musical material. Everything happens at present times in charts, there is no tendency to eurodance. Everything is very mixed and variable.
